The egg symbolizing the universe with the serpent of creative life force encircled. How do we break out of the shell of our paradigm and emerge renewed?
“The egg is a germ of life with a lofty symbolical significance. It is not just a cosmogonic symbol — it is also a “philosophical one”. As the former it is the Orphic Egg, the world’s beginning; as the latter, the philosophical egg of the medieval natural philosophers, the vessel from which, at the end of the opus alchymicum, the homunculus emerges… the spiritual, inner, and complete man.”
~ C. Jung
Based on Jacob Bryant’s, Orphic Egg, 1774
Mural painted at private residence in Joshua Tree, CA – Timelapse
I don’t know the story behind the photo reference I used for this water color sketch but it seems to capture something that goes beyond animal captivity… finding peace with what enslaves.
Here’s a piece for Arttrap’s outdoor art and sculpture installation gallery.

“The semi-independent network of neurons that constitutes the “small brain in the heart” is closely connected with the brain its self. Together, they make up a true “heart-brain system.” Within this system, the two organs constantly influence each other. Among the mechanisms connecting the heart and the brain, the autonomic nervous system plays a particularly important role. It has two branches: the “sympathetic” branch speeds up the heart and activates the emotional brain, the “parasympathetic” branch acts as a brake on both.”
– Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, The Institute to Heal
Special thanks to Terry Lynn Taylor of the Joshua Tree Retreat Center for having the vision of it becoming the replacement of the old illegible sun worn Institute of Mental Physics sign. Also would like to thank Juan Thorp for making the board, frame and install happen.
